/

Video Outline

0:28 – I Explain why “Face your Fears” is stupid advice. 0:49 – Strategy 1 to deal with fear 1:40 – Strategy 2 to deal with fear 2:10 – Strategy 3 to deal with fear 2:30 – I explain why you don’t need to worry about the future (this is important and it’s not lame!)

To get the most out of the video above do the following:

1. Watch the Video 3 times. 2. The First time just listen to it. Pay attention to see what resonates. 3. The second time pull out a paper, pencil and write down any key points that can help you. 4. The third time wait a few days and then come back and watch it again. This allows your mind to mull it over. To process it.

3 Thoughts About Fear

Thought 1: Our dreams are the vehicle to become the person we want to be – so of course it is scary. [Click to tweet]

Thought 2: There is no courage without fear. [Click to tweet]

Thought 3: There is one way to forever avoid fear: Be nothing. Do nothing. Say nothing. Do you want that? [Click to tweet]

This is awesome! I’ll take it :) .

    This is Superb, Izzy!!
I’ve been fearful most of the times in my life, and ‘facing fear’ straightaway doesnt work at all, not for me..
I liked what you said in the video, specifically the first strategy.. I’m goin to think about this for some time, and will get back to you later.. :)
The drawings are awesome, loved that last one with the box! Haha :D

      Hi Aditi :) .

It is kind of crazy but it really is powerful to just acknowledge that fear is part of the process. There is something special about this that allows us to begin to embrace the fear and push through it. Whenever I feel fear – I just remind myself “It comes with the territory”.

    Izzy, I love the
idea of a growth mindset. Also, focusing on the present time is the best way to
enjoy your life, and live life to the fullest. I know we hear it a lot but I
think it is not happening that much in the world in practice. Hopefully the
more times the message gets out there the more it will click with people. It is
truly a life changer. Whenever we are not focusing on now, we need to become
aware of it and return to the present. The more we become aware and bring
ourselves back the more we get out of life, and the slower time passes. Being present impacts us on the cellular level and slows aging. Have a
    great weekend!

Hi Wendy :) . I think the phrase “live in the present” is highly abused. Many people say it, but do it by spending all their time on pleasure activities rather than activities that help them grow. I guess this is the danger of that phrase. There seems to be a subtle implication that if we live in the present we should completely ignore the future. I disagree with this approach. I believe we must identify where we want to be in the future and then focus on the exact steps we can take today to get us there.

I super one zillion percent agree with you regarding the more aware we are the more we will enjoy our lives. Kind of crazy stuff (in a good way).

One thing you said really stands out Izzy! When you mentioned why we should not worry about the future. Because when that moment comes you will be a different person. I had to rewind that and listen again. WOW!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

What’s up Coach :) . I really like calling you that!

Yeah, it’s one of those things that has helped me immensely throughout my journey. Whenever I start getting caught up in the future I just remind myself – “If you take the steps today, you can grow into the person that can handle that situation.” It’s powerful because 1) it calms me and even more importantly 2) It motivates me to focus on growth and learning today.

      Thanks for commenting man.

“Our dreams are the vehicle to become the person we want to be – so of course it is scary.” It’s scary ’cause YOU are your own chauffeur , you cant say well so and so took the wrong turn so now I’m on the wrong path! Cool blog Izzy I’m a fellow martial artist living my dream. Just got my black belt in Kung Fu recently so now my true learning begins. Peace!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Congratulations on getting your black belt! That is wonderful. Martial arts are truly amazing to me, because the deeper we go with it the more there is to learn. It is truly remarkeable! Everyday I go to the dojo and learn more – I discover much more that I do not know. It’s ironic – and I LOVE IT!
You nail it Aileen! It is very scary because it is on our own shoulders to make it happen. At the same time it is also incredibly empowering.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Great video Izzy!!!
3 things we should never forget….
That part about focusing on today is really a big challenge. The worry about the future is stronger, generally.
Thanks for sharing so much with us. Your blog has shown me that I have to change a lot in my life….
I am starting doing that right now… :)

    Have a nice weekend!!

      Hi Fabio :) .
I’m so excited that you are making changes in your life. When someone truly begins to take big steps in their life I like to call it “The Awesome Cycle”. As we begin to make positive changes and we make a difference it is empowering. Then we start to realize what we are capable of so we push ourselves more. As we continue to push all of our previous actions build upon each other. And before we know it we are caught up in this cycle of awesomeness where we just keep on learning and growing :) .
      Keep on making it happen!

Very crazy drawings indeed Izzy! I can’t wait to see me featured in these cartoons – how about featuring your readers in your cartoons? haha that could upset a lot of people real quick.

And advice about focusing on today is not only good for dealing with fear but for dealing with life. We only have each day – what’s the most we can get done that day? Fear is paralyzing in that it prevents us from taking action but if we can just take action each day, it has a powerful cumulative effect. Conquering fear one day at a time is like chopping like wood – you’ll break fear down slowly, then break it in half. (then have a nice fire, and romantic dinner, with a campfire…)

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Hahaha! That might not work out so well. I’m really good at making fun of myself, my posts, and “archetypes” of confused people. I actually did almost feature you in one of my cartoons a month back. If you look at this post: http://30yearoldninja.com/12-lessons-learn-hard/ and look at “lesson 8″ I almost put your name in it. But then I decided not to. But in my heart you are “The comment master”.

Vishnu I love this line/question. “What is the most we can get done that day?”

It is an incredibly powerful question to focus on.

Lately I’ve been really wondering how to have a romantic dinner – so I’m really glad you added that last portion. Maybe that should be your next blog post (350 ways to be Romantic – By Vishnu)… That is bound to go viral… right?

Izzy, keep on inspiring people man, its your greatest skill (aside from martial arts obv.).
You were part of my inspiration to travel to Nepal, and I’m well on my way to making that a reality too!
Just to add to what you’re written, I think the biggest step to take is the first one which is believing that you can make your dreams a reality. When i first thought about going to Nepal my mind was filled with questions and uncertainties. But once I starting thinking through the day by day steps I would take i realized it was totally possible, and honestly not even that big of a deal. I’m sure all great achievements feel like no big deal once we have achieved them! Keep fighting the good fight, i’ll be tracking your progress!

Also, thanks for your comments on my blog, much appreciated brother!

    Best,
    Ev @ evgenynepal.blogspot.com

      Hi Ev :) .

You bring up an excellent point. We must believe in our ideas. I often don’t say this because belief isn’t something we can just magically do. It is a consequence of certain choices and behaviors. But as you point out – as you started to break it down into viable steps you started to believe.

You are correct – it does reach a point where belief may be all we have. But that alone is enough to keep a person pushing. For me, there are many thing that I still have no clue how I am going to do but I have unquestionable faith and belief I can do it. (My most recent evolution to my dream is that after I leave Japan I want to travel the world while training in martial arts – but that will be in some time as I still want to live in Japan for a while).

Glad to drop by and comment on your blog man.
