7 Steps to Identify The Direction Your Life Needs to Take.

Staring at my computer screen.

Confused, overwhelmed, tired…

I sat there, lost in my own thoughts.

I would follow my dream… If I knew what it was.

It’s a pretty big question, right?

What do you want to do with your life?

I Don’t Know What I Want.

It was February of 2012.

I had quit my job, moved to Japan, and was in the pursuit of some crazy dream: to become a ninja.

I was placed in the countryside of Japan. In the countryside there was a lot of rice fields, and zero martial arts dojos.

My job was a joke! My biggest responsibility was “Read this English word Izzy sensei.”

I would stand in front of a classroom with 30 + kids and read English words with my “Native Tongue”.

In short I was a $45,000 tape recorder…

No matter how many ways I try to say it (or spell it!), being a human tape recorder and being a ninja are not synonyms.

You Can’t Start When You Don’t Know Where To Start.

I could have “put off” becoming a ninja, signed my contract for another year.

I could have moved back to America under the guise of “Hey, I gave it a shot.”

Something inside of me wouldn’t let it die.

Instead of running from the question:

What do I want to do with my life?

I faced it head on.

I took personality tests, read books, listened to Educational Audio, and completed various exercises to help give me clarity.

To my shock… it worked.

I would soon take a step I never could have imagined…

Clarity is The Answer.

10 months ago if you would have said

“Izzy what are you going to do?”

I would have smiled and said:

“I don’t know…”

But soon therafter I would follow a series of steps that have forever changed my life.

I took my dream to a level I never imagined possible.

I quit my job in the countryside of Japan and moved to Kyoto.

I found part time work.

I found a new place to live.

I extended my visa for 3 years.

I found an incredible martial ars dojo.

I train extensively in martial arts.

All in a country where I can’t speak the native language.

This was made possible because of one simple thing…

Clarity.

Above all else, if we are going to pursue our dreams we must be clear on what we want.

Once we know what we want, then we can focus on learning the necessary skills to make it happen.

If we don’t know what we want then we can’t get it.

You can’t hit a target you can’t see.

Makes sense, right?

Over these next few weeks I am going to start sharing the exact strategies I have used to discover my dream and then live it.

Today we are going to run through a process that will help you gain clarity.

By the end of this exercise you will learn what you want your life to be like in 5 years.

7 Steps to Figure Out The Direction of Your Life.

Step 1: Grab a stopwatch, a pen, and a lined paper (or open a word document),

Step 2: Set the timer to 10 minutes.

Step 3: Write at the top of the paper 5 Year Vision

Step 4: Write out Your 5 Year Vision (Instructions Below)

As soon as you begin writing start the timer. You have 10 minutes!

You are sitting in the exact spot you are now, wearing the same clothes,, staring at your computer. The only difference is that you are 5 years older and you have achieved all of your dreams!

Write down every sentence in present tense.

The first sentence of your 5 year vision should be:

I am _______ years old (write down how old you will be in 5 years)

All of your dreams have come true. Answer the following questions in your vision:

  • What has happened?
  • What have you accomplished over these previous 5 years?
  • How much money do you make?
  • What relationships do you have?
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • What activities are you involved in?
  • How do you impact other people’s lives?
  • Where do you work?
  • How often do you work?
  • How do you feel throughout the day?
  • What excites you?
Once the timer is up, complete the sentence and move to the next step.

Step 5: Answer the Key Reflection Questions

Look over your 5 year vision and answer these questions.

1. What stuck out to you?

2. What surprised you?

3. Underline the 2 to 3 “most important” sentences. Why are those the most important sentences?

4. If those 2 to 3 “most important sentences” happened, how would that change your life? (Be super specific).

Step 6: Create The Life Changing Visual

Take a Large Piece of Paper and write at the top of it: My Most Important Goal.

Now, look at your 2 to 3 “most important sentences” and summarize it into 1 sentence. This might be difficult – so what :) . It’s worth it.

Now, write this 1 sentence underneath where you wrote “My Most Important Goal.”

Place this “Most Important Goal” visual in a place you see everyday. I placed mine in my planner. A client of mine placed it on her mirror. Another person put it on his cars odometer.

All that matter is that you will see it all the time!

Next is the step that brings power to this whole process.

Step 7: Identify and Take the First Step.

Look at your “Most Important Goal”. This is the single most important thing in your life right now! That is crazy powerful.

Here is the thing – if you accomplish this goal it will give you crazy momentum to achieve all other things in your life.

Remember – this is the most important thing in your life. If it truly is the most important thing in your life then nothing should stop you!

Now the focus needs to shift on “How can I make this happen?”

Do not say “I can’t!” People who constantly say “I can’t” live half hearted, mediocre lives, sitting on the sidelines… That’s not a good thing.

It’s possible! It’s simply a question of “How?”

To accomplish anything, it requires a series of steps. To get to step 2 you must first complete step 1… Yeah, okay I know this is really obvious – but I’m making a point, gosh darnet!

Do not worry about step 2! All you need to do is figure out step 1. Identify the very first thing you can do today to move towards your “Most Important Goal”. Then do it!

This doesn’t have to be massive. Maybe you can “Send an email”, “Make a phone call”, “Write 1 Page”, “Take a Run”. The list goes on and on.

Do you see what we are doing here? We are breaking down a big massive goal into small tiny parts.

A 26.2 mile marathon is the accumulation of 10 inch steps… Step, step, step, and eventually you complete a marathon.

A Final Word

Clarity is everything in the pursuit of a dream.

If you aren’t clear on what you want, you can’t make it happen. If you are clear, you can make it happen. [Click to Tweet]

In all of human existence, nobody has ever reached step 2 without first doing step 1… Today, focus on taking step 1.

amazing stuff izzy! Cant wait to try it. You are damn right about those tiny little steps. Sometimes it is just about that one phone call, email or whatever. It´s like running – you take a fist step and then you realize YOU are running! I think MY DREAM has started to grow in that exact one moment – I took that first step.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Yeah Lucas – it’s kind of amazing when you think about it. Massive huge accomplishments are just a bunch of small steps added up :) .

Once you get through the exercise I would love to hear how it turns out for you :) . Either reply in these comments or feel free to shoot me an email at: izzy@30yearoldninja.com

You had me at 7 steps but lost me at 10 minutes. It was between 10 minutes to get clarity on my life or watch another 12 minutes of the Kardashians. Guess who won?

So here’s a question – almost legitimate and maybe not even a joke – what if you don’t know the final destination? I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing and moving in the right direction but I’m not so sure what the destination is. It’s like pick your own ending type of books. My story could end in abject poverty and deportation, wild success and riches, jail time and court dates.

Oh, scratch that last line. What do you think of moving in the right direction but not knowing where that direction will lead you? Can I live life like a treasure hunt but not know where the treasure will be? If there will be one at all? And if the treasure must be stolen, broken into or robbed at gun point? (this line would relate back to paragraph 2 about jail time and court dates)

Why can’t I just ask a serious question here! I feel like while the rest of your readers are enjoying the holidays and preparing for the new year, I can finally have your full attention. haha I know I have it anyway but would like your thoughts on this issue.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Vishnu, Gosh darnet man! How do you come up with these questions? They are freaking awesome.

I want to create a post where I record you asking questions for 30 minutes. I’m kind of kidding… But kind of not :) .

Here is the question I love!

“What do you think of moving in the right direction but not knowing where that direction will lead you”

That is what a dream is all about! When I moved to Japan I had no freaking clue I would end up quitting my job and moving to freaking Kyoto and training full time.

My initial plan was to move to Japan keep a full time job and train in the evenings. I was going to live in Japan for 2 to 3 years then move back to America and get a job and have a normal life…

NOW, I SAY SCREW THAT LIFESTYLE! I’m all in man!

This is my life. I am never going back to a job in America. I want to spend my life learning martial arts. I want to travel around the world becoming an expert in martial arts.

I never could have discovered this when I first started. A dream is a constant evolution :) .

I’m in Agreement Vishnu with Izzy on this one… A dream is a constant evolution!

    Izzy,

Another great post!!! The 7 steps worked for me ;-) . I loved the Brian Tracy style of breaking your big goals into smaller goals and moving small steps. (Eat that frog? ;) ). And you used one of my favourites quotes “You can’t hit a target that you can’t see” (another one I love is: Everyone that are at the top of their game today one day didn’t know anything about it and was at the bottom, so you can learn anything you want!) :) .

I don’t know how you manage to write so many quality posts but keep them coming. And I am looking forward to seeing your name one day as one of the big self-development best-selling authors :)
    Happy holidays

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Dude Marcelo! I love Brian Tracy :) . I read his books and love his inspiring audiotapes.

Marcelo, I am really glad that the posts are able to help you out. I share my experiences because I want to help others follow their dreams. I am thrilled to play a role in your journey.

I would feel honored and humbled to write a book. I certainly hope to do it within the near future (Yes, it is a goal!) Thanks for taking the time to write such a kind comment.

  • J.D. Meier

    Great purpose, path, and process.

I really like how you framed out, in a prescriptive way, an approach for getting your vision on.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

I like how called it “getting your vision on”… That put a huge smile on my face :) .

Really glad it helped you out J.D. Happy New Year man!

Do you think you’ll learn the language while you’re there? I can relate to you in that I also moved abroad thinking “this was it!” This was the pursuit of my dreams. But when I got there it was like, “now what?” And realizing, oh shit, I don’t have a plan. I wing these things. So that meant I was still floating around figuring out what I wanted to do next, but this time in a foreign country where I don’t know the language! I have a bit more clarity so its just the pursuit of going after what I want now!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

For shizzle Janet :) . Learning the language is one of my top 3 goals while in Japan. It’s really important to me, because the better I get with the language the more my quality of life improves.

I completely agree with you that having a plan (or at minimum some solid goals!) is critical. I meet a lot of foreigners in Japan that seem to be running from something. I think that moving to a foreign country can be dangerous for some people because they have unfair expectations about living in that country.

Now that you know what you want, you can make it happen! That’s some powerful stuff… I wish I could bust a rap about this :) .

  • Fabio

    Great post Izzy!!

I did the process and the result was incredible. This thing works very well!!!
Now I know that I need to start the practice of Kendo soon and keep studying a lot everyday :)

    Thanks and happy new year!!!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

That is awesome to hear Fabio. I’m glad it helped you out :) .

Thanks for taking the time to write about it.

Cows get very large and healthy, not by planning, but by grazing — eating the tastiest stuff in front of them. I think grazing is overlooked as a valid way of going through life. You have to plan parts, but other times you graze. Plus, as you progress through goals, your vision becomes clearer and you will probably make different plans. Fun isn’t it?

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Haha! That’s a different way to look at it man. For me, I’m kind of an intense dude so I like to take things on at full speed. I’m most excited when I got some big tasks ahead of me.

The irony is that the more I am focused on my goals, the more relaxed I feel. The more I tackle my goals the more I enjoy everyday.

All that being said, I do think it is important to take some time aside and just think. I like heading to temples or going on a walk in a quiet neighborhood. I’m always amazed by how much it relaxes me when I sit and stare at temples.

I gotta say, I like the 5-year-vision exercise a lot. I already had a good idea of what I wanted to accomplish, but it’s crazy how I had some new insights and observations rolling in as I wrote out what my “dream come true” scenario looks like. You can say this had a good refining and therapeutic effect for my current plans.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Yeah, it’s kind of a crazy exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to increase clarity. The more clear we are on what we want the easier it is to tackle it.

When someone knows exactly what they want, they have the base to start making massive things happen in their life.

  • Performative Element

This came at a very perfect time. Thank you.
