How to Identify Your Dream and Live it.
It’s a funny thing.
Or maybe it’s not…
You want to live your dream.
Yet you aren’t doing it.
I have a question:
If you want to live your dream… Why aren’t you?
Paralyzed
It’s a strange question isn’t it. We all have dreams, aspirations, and hopes.
Yet very few of us are living it.
If you have a dream, and you aren’t taking the steps to turn it into a reality it’s a scary question:
Why aren’t you following your dream?
There’s a Reason.
Here’s the thing – there’s an answer to that question.
But before I get to the reasons you aren’t living your dream I want to explain what isn’t the problem…
The problem is not:
- You are lazy
- You lack discipline
- You lack talent
- You’re not smart enough
- You’re weak
- You aren’t brave enough
- Your life circumstances don’t allow it
Yet, here is the massive irony…
I discuss the pursuit of dreams with people all the time – more often than not they give one of the reasons above.
If you are using any of the reasons mentioned above… You are wrong.
Yes! Those things are very real. People are lazy, lack discipline, are afraid and so on… But those are not “The Reason” They are symptoms of a much bigger reason.
Below I’m going to share the 2 reasons with you. Then I’m going to explain how to deal with each of them.
And for those of you that are truly ready to take it to the next level… I got some REALLY exciting stuff (but don’t let me get ahead of myself).
The 2 reasons people do not follow their dream
There are 2 primary reasons people do not follow their dreams.
1. You don’t know what your dream is.
If you have no idea what you want to become, then you can’t become it…
If you have no idea where you want to go, you can’t go there.
In the great words of Brian Tracy:
You can’t hit a target you can’t see.
Therefore if you have no idea what your dream is – you can’t live it. The single most important thing you must do is to identify your dream.
Obvious, right?
So, below I will share with you a specific process and set of actions you can take to bring massive clarity to your dreams… And I also have a surprise for those ready to go next level (There I go again, getting ahead of myself).
Let’s say you actually know your dream, but you can’t gain any traction. You want it, but you are going no where. If this is the case the reason you aren’t following your dream is very simple.
This brings us to reason number 2
2. You simply don’t know how To Turn Your Dream Into a Reality.
It’s so simple it almost sounds trite. But it’s not.
The evidence that a person knows how to do something is that they do it.
So if you aren’t doing it – then you don’t know how to do it.
If you know your dream, and you know exactly how to accomplish it, then you will do it.
Initially you may feel a resistance to this. You might think “I know what to do… I just need to do it!”
Really? Be honest with yourself. Do you really know how to do it? I will confidently scream from the rooftops – NO YOU DON’T!
Really think about this. This is an incredibly empowering statement. This means your inability to follow your dream isn’t because you are a failure, lazy, or weak… It simply means you lack the necessary knowledge to make it happen.
So now that I have thoroughly disturbed you, let’s jump into 1) How to discover your dream and 2) How to live it.
How To Identify and Live Your Dream
Let’s jump into the process.
The 5 Steps to Identify Your Dream
I’m going to make a statement that might freak you out… Or excite you, depending on which side of the bed you rolled up on.
The vast majority of people already know their dream – they just haven’t admitted it to themselves.
It is scary to admit to ourselves what we truly want. Because once we know what we want, then we have no excuse for making an attempt. As long as we can hide under the veil of “I don’t know” we never have to take the risk, and put our heart and soul on the line.
The exercises I share below work! The purpose of each of these exercises is to increase the clarity of what you want in your life. As you gain more clarity you can take action. As you take action more clarity will develop. It’s what I call “An awesome cycle”.
Step 1: Develop Your 5 Year Vision
You need to grab a piece of paper, a pencil (or use your computer) and a stopwatch.
Set up the stop watch to 6 minutes.
Imagine in 5 years your life is perfect! You have achieved all of your wildest dreams. You are living the life you have always wanted. Do not be concerned with “how”. If it scares you, then it is critically important to write it down.
During the 6 minutes you will cover the following things.
What activities do you participate in? How much money do you make? How do you make money? What kind of relationships do you have? What types of people are in your life? What types of emotions do you feel? What do you eat? What exercises do you do? What do you do to improve your physical health?
Start the 6 minutes now! GO GO GO!
Step 2: Read your 5 year vision out loud
Now, you are going to read your 5 year vision out loud.
Yes, this might feel a tad bit strange to read it out loud, but this is powerful.
Who are you reading it to? Yourself!
When we step back and read it out loud it is incredibly powerful. This will bring a surprising amount of clarity as you read it out loud.
Step 3: Answer the following questions.
On the back of your 5 year vision answer these questions. Write as much or as little as you please.
- How did it feel to write down your 5 year vision?
- What surprised you?
- Look at your 5 year vision. Underline the most important sentence.
- Look at the sentence you underlined. Why is it so important? What impact will it have on your life if accomplished.
Step 4: Rewrite the answers to questions 3 and 4 using the following template:
The most important thing in my life right now is: (summarize the sentence you underlined) because (summarize what you put for question 4 above).
Make sure, make sure, MAKE SURE to write everything in present tense. This is important because it allows our minds to envision it as happening now. Saying “I will…” is very dangerous because “I will…” is a future action. If you constantly say you “will” do something you will never get to it because it’s in the future. The only moment we are in is the present.
For example, instead of saying: I will earn $80,000. Replace that with: I earn $80,000.
Step 5: Create The Dream Board
Take the statement you wrote in step 4 and rewrite it or type it in big letters on a large piece of paper. Printing it on the computer in big text is perfectly fine.
What you have with this statement is the single most important thing you want to accomplish in your life right now. Do you realize how powerful this is?
It’s wildly powerful! Remember the purpose of this exercise is to establish clarity. We are developing a funnel here. As you gain more clarity and take action you will… gain more clarity. And the cycle repeats itself.
Once you know what you want, the next step in the equation is to figure out how to do it. So onto the next leg of the journey
.
How to Live Your Dream.
There is one key characteristic above all else that will accelerate your progress on your dream. It is being “Action oriented”. In other words, do not get caught up in the details. Rather focus on taking action. As you take action you will learn more and more. But this is the tricky part, many people do not know where to start.
Now I am going to share with you the specific techniques to help you start accelerating towards your dream.
Step 1: Place The Dream Board in front of you (from the previous exercise).
Pull out the dream board and place it right in front of you. Read it out loud. Look at it, gaze at it, blow kisses at it… No need to take it any further, let’s keep it “PG”.
Step 2: Identify what to keep doing and what to stop doing.
Answer these 2 questions:
- What did I do last week that helped move me towards my dream (I call these “Awesome Behaviors”?
- What did I do last week that prevented me from moving towards my dream?
By answering these 2 questions you are identifying the specific actions you must keep doing (your answer to question 1: The Awesome Behaviors)) and what actions you must stop doing (you answer to question 2).
Step 3: Identify the new behaviors. Now answer this question:
- What new behaviors must I start doing to move towards my dream(I call these “New Awesome Behaviors)?
By answering this question you are identifying the specific new behavior you must start doing(“New Awesome Behaviors”).
Step 4: Combine the Awesome Behaviors.
If you take the “Awesome Behaviors” you are currently doing and combine those with your “New Awesome Behavior” that you identified then you are going to dramatically accelerate your progress towards your dreams.
It’s a simple formula: Awesome Behaviors + New Awesome Behaviors = Massive Acceleration Towards Your Dream.
What you have here is a detailed strategy to accelerate towards your dreams. You now know exactly what you need to start doing!
Taking It to the Next Level: One on One Dream Consultations
Over the previous 3 years of my life I quit my job, moved to a foreign country and have pursued my dream.
I have read countless books, completed numerous exercises, and consulted with people of all ages on the pursuit of their dreams.
But most importantly, I am living breathing proof this stuff works. I quit a “respectable” job in the field of Education to follow a ridiculous dream: to become a ninja…
I know what it is like to have no F’ing clue what you want to do with your life and then to pull a massive 180 and pursue your dream.
I don’t just dream it. I live it!
For those of you that are ready to take your dream to the next level – I am going to offer individualized one on one dream consultation services.
This isn’t some “let’s skype and talk it out” session. NO WAY! This is serious stuff. I have developed an extensive and detailed process that will help you:
- Learn exactly what you want from your life.
- Identify the most important things in your life.
- Know how to prioritize the “important things” in your life.
- Identify the first steps to move towards the life you have always dreamed of.
- Dramatically accelerate your progress towards your dreams.
- Develop a clear action plan.
- Learn how to keep yourself accountable on a daily basis.
- Develop a system that makes sure your daily actions are aligned with your dream.
- Increase your day-to-day efficiency (immensely!).
- Develop an accountability system that is motivating, encouraging, and empowering.
At the core of everything I do is one simple principle: I want to encourage, inspire and educate you to turn your dream into a reality. That being said, I only want to work with you if I am confident that I can help you make it happen.
Personally, I feel it’s a bit risky to begin consulting with someone you don’t know personally. So, I want to make this as smooth as possible. I want both of us to feel confident, excited and energized to work together. My goal above all else is to help you.
So, this is how it works. If you are interested in doing one on one consultations enter your email below.
Once you confirm you will get an email that asks you 3 specific questions. Go ahead and answer those questions. From there, we will set up a free 30 minute skype consultation.
During this 30 minute consultation we will run through a specific detailed exercise to help you gain massive clarity on what is important to you right now!
If after this meeting we both feel that we can work together, then we can move forward. If I don’t feel I can help (or you don’t feel I can help) then I will direct you towards someone (or something) that can. My role in this process is very simple: I want to help you.
