My 3 Massive Goals – The Journey To Become A Ninja (January Update)

ugghhh…. I want to sleep.

But you made a promise.

I’m so tired.

But you made a promise.

My body won’t move.

But you made a promise.

I’ll just go to an extra class tomorrow.

Yeah, that will work… I’ll attend Aikido tomorrow.

15 Minutes Later – Do I Live The Dream?

Gosh darnet! I can’t sleep.

I’ve slept 5 hours. I was up late last night, talking with my video designer.

A beautiful conversation… But now my eyes, my body, and my mind are F’ing with me.

I want to sleep, but I can’t. My commitments keep running through my mind:

“How can I say I want to be an expert in martial arts and go back to sleep?”

Guess, I gotta follow through with my promise… The promise I made to myself.

I look at my phone – It’s 615am. I got 15 minutes, to eat, dress, pack my stuff and jump on my bike.

Every moment, every choice, every thought and action counts! I either move forward with my dreams or I move farther from them.

I’m cold, I’m tired, and I’m annoyed… But today I’m following my dream.

My awareness of the role this moment plays in my long term goals forces me out of bed… Even though it sucks huge dog balls to do it :) .

Ignorance isn’t bliss… But it does allow us to accept mediocrity. [Click to Tweet]

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is Izzy!

Here’s the deal.

This site, everything I write about is based upon the life I live.

I don’t sit on a couch all day writing blog posts and books telling you “go follow your dreams.” As far as I’m concerned… That is complete and total B.S!

This site is about living your dream – not “talking about your dream”.

So each and everyday – I have a choice. I can either maintain my integrity, which means I take massive steps towards my dreams. Or I can lie to each and everyone of you… I can sit back and “write about it” but “do nothing towards my dream”.

I know how to follow a dream, because I live my dream. [Click to Tweet]

How can I dare to say one word to you, if I’m not living it. Bottom line – I can’t! Or let me rephrase that – I shouldn’t. There’s a lot of so called “experts” out there that aren’t doing a darn thing… Except telling you what you should do. If I don’t live it, I’m full of —- (gotta keep it PG, though that “dog balls” line earlier might have stretched that boundary).

I lead by example. Period.

So with that being said – Let’s discuss my goals over the next 100 days of my life. And even more importantly how I am going to achieve those.

Solution- My 3 Massive Goals in 100 Days

In my previous post, I discussed the critical importance of developing a game plan.

I stated that you need 3 very specific goals, with 3 “Why”‘s, and then a set of objectives to accomplish each of those goals. Click here to read that post.

Below are my 3 major goals that I want to accomplish by April 17th. I follow each goal with my own “3 Why’s”. Last I share the specific actions (I call these objectives) I will take to accomplish these goals.

My 3 major goals are:

Goal 1: Earn my 5th kyu in Aikido by April 1st

Why 1: I will be on my way to becoming an expert in martial arts. Why 2: I will get in great shape. Why 3: I will feel awesome about my progress and learn awesome new techniques

Goal 2: Pass a self proctored Japanese Language Proficient Test (JLPT) Level 4

Why 1:This will drastically improve my quality of life in Japan! Why 2: I can talk to that cute girl at the coffee shop. Why 3: It will be freaking awesome to speak Japanese!

Goal 3: Gain 3,000 subscribers to this site

Why 1: I will be able to impact WAY more lives. Why 2: It will drastically increase the reach of my message: “Don’t just dream it. Live it”. Why 3: It will feel freaking awesome with 1 click of a button send an email to 3,000 people! :) .

This is exactly what I want to achieve over the next 86 days of my life (I am already in the midst of them so the countdown has already begun) and why I want to achieve it.

I seriously want to make out with these goals. Yes, that is awkward.

Now let’s discuss how I plan to achieve this :) .

How I Will Achieve My 3 Massive Goals.

Before I break down how I am going to do this let me explain the difference between a goal and an objective.

A goal is the outcome I want to achieve. But in reality – I can’t control the goal. I cannot force my sensei to give me my 5th kyu in Aikido. I cannot go to people’s homes and force them to sign up. I cannot guarantee that I get a passing score on the JLPT test.

I can control the steps I take to put me in the best position to achieve success. [Click to Tweet]

The specific steps, or actions that I take to achieve my goals are what I call objectives. Objectives are 100 percent in my control.

So I have my goals, and then I develop the objectives that I believe will put me in the best position to achieve this goal.

Now, there is a key component to this that I must emphasize. This whole process requires incredibly flexibility, reflection, and constant change.

Each and every week I must learn and evolve based on real world evidence. I then must re-examine my objectives to see if they are putting me on target to achieve my goals (more about that at the end of this post).

Now, with that being said – let’s look at my how I plan to achieve each goal.

Goal #1: I Earn my 5th Kyu in Aikido by April 1st

Objective 1: I train in Aikido 12 hours per week on average. Objective 2: I attend Aikido 5 days per week. Objective 3: I exercise 6 days per week (this includes outside exercises) Objective 4: I memorize all 5th kyu movements by January 31st. Objective 5: I read 2 books on Aikido by March 31st.

Goal #2: I pass a self-proctored JLPT level 4 Test by April 17th

Objective 1: I formally study Japanese 7.5 hours per week. Objective 2: I attend live Japanese classes 3x per week at an 1.5 hours each time (totaling 4.5 hours per week). Objective 3: I self-study Japanese for 3 hours per week. Objective 4: I speak only Japanese when running errands or tasks in Japan (except when with native English speakers or Japanese people who want to practice their Engish) Objective 5: I meet with a Japanese conversational partner 1x per week.

Goal #3: I gain 3,000 Subscribers to this site by April 17th

Objective 1: I write a total of 35 guest posts. (2 per week for the first 7 weeks. 3 per week for the final 7 weeks). Objective 2: I provide insanely useful downloadable resources for subscribers 3 times by April 17th. Objective 3: I develop 3 win-win partnerships with other exceptional bloggers to help us both expand our message. Objective 4: : Read 10 Non-fiction books (I apply what I read to my life, and then I share my experiences with all of you! I know the stuff I share works because I live it!) Objective 5: This last one I’m so excited about. But guess what, It’s a secret. You’ll start hearing about it come late February… Yeah, I just did that :) .

Monthly Updates

So, here’s the deal. From here on out – I’m going to provide you with monthly updates on my goals. Next month I’ll run through a detailed analysis on my success, failures, and lessons learned.

The best way we can learn is to see it put in action, then apply it to our own lives.

On top of this – I’m irritated by all the **** out there with people sitting on a couch blogging and writing “self-help” content yet they don’t live it!

I live what I write. I know this stuff works because I feel it in my heart and soul every morning when I wake up.

Now, go out, write down 3 goals, 3 whys, and develop your objectives. But most importantly, go live it.

For The Comments

What are your 3 massive goals? How will you achieve them? (If you are struggling with this, please put it down in the comments. I’m sure you’re not the only one. I’d love to help!)

Alright! I look forward to your monthly updates :)

      Awesome Charlie :) .

That’s what I love about your site, Izzy. You are actually living the dream before you started writing about it. I think that’s why your material is top-notch. I waited a year before I started my blog and I know how easier it is to write from your heart.

    My 3 are:

Find a way to help people achieve a lucid dream quicker than the standard 1-3 months; lots and lots of experimenting.

Write a book about it; I enjoy writing.

I have a goal to release 12 Kindle books this year( only 1 is lucid dreaming); Hopefully about 1000 words per day and find a designer in Thailand who will make my covers.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Those are some seriously legit goals bro! I have to throw this thought out: Why do you want to write 12 books? Is it to generate income or to practice writing? The reason I ask this is because your “why” could have a crazy impact on the best course of action. For example, if you were doing it for income it would make sense to make 2 books and then do some fantastic marketing. But if you were doing it to improve your writing (or street cred) then it makes sense to write 12 books.

      I love those goals man! 1,000 words a day 30,000 word a month, 365,000 words a year… I can’t even count that high :) .

      • http://lucidability.com/ Jamie Alexander

        Hey Izzy,

12 is just a number to keep me on track because it means I will do doing about 1 per month. If I just said two books I would procrastinate. They might not be 30,000 words, but somewhere near. I already write about 4000-5000 for my job anyway.

As for the reason, the biggest one is because for a few of the books I have something on my chest that I want to get off, but practice definitely comes into it. So does money in a way. I threw up my freebie book and in a small niche without marketing it’s made $60 p/m the last two months. I know after a year I could be making enough passive income to pay my rent on a nice apartment so that’s nice too.

        • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

That’s legit! I hope you not only nail your goals, but you destroy them :) . Your a really solid writer and your only going to get better. Your words flow very nicely. I bet you could write some pretty darn good fiction. Though, I’m not sure which realms you’re exploring.

Either which way, keep me “in the know” on your goals brother. I think what you put forth sounds like a legit reason. You are putting a structure in place that will lead to success. I expect to see your new place on on one of those “mansions of the millionaires” show’s on TV.

          • http://lucidability.com/ Jamie Alexander

Thanks for the kind words, Izzy.

I don’t really consider that work because I’ll be doing it for a few hours at night once I’ve finished my work + website for the day. I’m enjoying writing at the moment and it will be better than watching TV. Some will definitely be fiction slash non-fiction. I’ll keep you up-to-date with how it’s going for sure. I think a mansion would be hard work lol

I’m actually flying back up to Chiang Mai on Friday to stay long-term and I’m going to upgrade the type of place I’m staying in. After being in Asia this long, a one bedroom apartment might feel like one of those mansions.

I’m looking forward to seeing what your product/course is going to look like. That’s great news about the coaching which will definitely take off.

          • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

It’s kind of interesting living in a foreign country in that for the first year I found myself accepting conditions that are pretty below average in America. But now after being here for over a year I now have higher expectations. I think initially my focus was on just surviving and functioning – but now it’s about thriving :) .

Yeah man! I’m way pumped about working one on one with people – thus far it’s been awesome! I love it :) . I’m way excited about the course I’m getting ready to put together as well. It’s gonna take some time to nail it all down but I’m ready for the challenge.

Standing at the ready for the updates!

      AWESOME!

Three very clear goals, with all the necessary steps to achieve them. Highly instructive!!

    But, Izzy, I have a question…

Do you manage to follow exactly what you planned for your week??

I guess i have set too many priorities for a day because, sometimes, i just can’t accomplish everything i wanted. But i can’t get rid of them (none of them) because they are all necessary to make my “5 year vision” come true…

How many priorities do you set during your day??
    How to deal with that???
How to prioritize things when everything is important??

I really need 48 hours in a day!!!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

That’s a beautiful question man. It depends on the week. Lately I have been doing a lot of things to make sure I achieve my goals. A big key is saying “no” to things that don’t align with my goals.

When I make a goal with objectives I see it as a promise to myself. I am promising to follow through with these actions. Sometimes it means I have to stay up late, other times it means I have to wake up very early.

Nobody bat 1,000 :) . The key is to improve each and every week. I try to identify what is holding me back and what is helping me succeed. I’m constantly reflecting to improve my process.

So, yeah, of course I mess up sometimes.

  • Gaël

Good luck with the JLPT! :)

I’m self-studying Japanese, and still not sure if I should take the test or not at some point.

    But in any case, がんばってね!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

      がんばる!ありがとうございます

  • BJ

Izzy – You chunk every goal down into daily manageble pieces. The chart you made earlier is remarkable and makes the goals possible (remember the SMART). Stand in your own intergrity, trust your process and go! You are an inspiration and both my boys, also studying to be Ninjas (who want to train in Japan), are curious and excited to see another “Gijin” work at this. My one son said, “follow the throw,” and I guess that means, resisitance and fear will not allow the flow of energy needed. Mindful action. BJ

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

I love this man! I’m not quite sure what your son meant – but I’m gonna assume it’s crazy deep and can potentially forever change your life and mine :) . I’ll go meditate on it.

Allowing resistance and fear to take us over kills our dreams. But at the same time it’s really important to listen to it because it can help guide us to what we “should do” (that which we fear).

    K, my 3 are:
    Join the gallery in Garberville.
Email or post card my mailing list about my 2day art show where I will have 10 paintings and painting live at Pancakes and Booze in SF.
Post my art on a major art web site.
    Among a bazillion other things!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Make it happen Sherri :) .

  • http://www.vishnusvirtues.com/ Vishnu

Your first 2 goals – wow. What is this aikido stuff? Is that something you drink to help you destroy your goals? And the third goal tops my measly attempt to crank out just 1 post per week.

I think I am going to get inspired by you as always to get more done in my life. best part about this post is letting us know your objectives or ‘why’s for each one.

I’m going to start creating an objective list of my 2 big goals this year of writing weekly posts and giving more!

you’re no normal human Izzy – you’re turning into a disciplined ninja with super-power abilities!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

hahaha! Well I’m glad it put some fire in your belly Vishnu (not some ice cream… or was that yogurt?).

Objectives are crazy powerful because they give us the steps to make it happen. I love them… probably a little bit too much.

  • Sean

Alright Izzy. Between today’s post & this one, you’ve shamed me into being accountable.

Improve fitness: Complete the p90x lean schedule by Apr 5th & improve my 2 mile pace by Apr 30th.
Improve nutrition: Get used to eating breakfast (coffee alone doesn’t count!) & cook at least 1 new recipe each Sat through Mar 2nd.
Improve knowledge: Work through the problems in my new algorithms book for at least 1hr on Saturdays & Sundays. That blasted book is 1300 pages long… this may take a while…
