The Three Questions That Guarantee You Will Achieve Your Goals

Another year, another goal.

Didn’t you do this a year ago…

Funny how that works.

Every year we swear up and down “This is the year!”

And to some degree you are correct. This is in fact “a year”.

But you didn’t quite use it as planned.

You wanted to lose weight, get a new job, find the love of your life.

Instead you watched a lot of TV…

If your life is going to change, then you have to change.

So… Why is this year any different? 20121231-122017.jpg

There is no “secret answer”

It was about 3 years ago.

I was unhappy. I had followed a career path that did 2 things:

  1. Impress women – “Hi my name’s Izzy. I teach children in poverty stricken communities.”
  2. Be depressed and extremely anxious

Though, it’s always nice to impress the ladies, the depression and anxiety didn’t bode to well with my soul.

I was at a crossroads in my life. I wanted to make changes but didn’t know how.

I was in search of a super secret answer. The answer that would guarantee I would achieve all my goals!

I wanted a quick fix that guaranteed happiness, wealth, and incredible success.

Now is the appropriate time to quote Napoleon Hill:

You don’t get something for nothing.

But there I was, going against all laws of the universe: trying to get something for nothing.

I was fighting a losing battle… To this day the universe is still undefeated.

20121231-122044.jpg

Progress Towards Goals Are Not Black or White.

To some degree I knew what I wanted.

I wanted to be happy. I wanted to feel at peace.

We don’t just wake up one day and magically become happy.

It takes time. Inch by inch. Day by day.

It simply comes down to doing the necessary work each day.

Notice I used the word “necessary”.

We all are vulnerable to wasting days, months and years doing things that give us zero progress towards our goals.

Turns out there is a very simple process that guarantees you accelerate progress towards your goals…

Analyze Your Progress Like a Scientist

What if everyday you stepped back and analyzed your day?

You studied your life like a coach studies game tape. You dissect your actions like a scientist.

What if everyday you could look at your life and analyze it to determine what worked, what didn’t work, and what changes you have to make.

… …

It turns out you can, and it’s really simple :) .

The Three Questions That Gaurantee You Will Achieve Your Goals and How to Use Them

Over the past year of my life I have implemented a process that has completely revolutionized my life. It has allowed me to accelerate my progress towards my goals at a rapid pace.

Today I will run through that process with you :) .

Now, before you go through this process I am assuming that you already have some specific goals. If you are struggling to figure out what you want to do with your life check out this post.

Okay, let’s jump in!

It all starts with 3 very simple questions.

The 3 Questions That Will Change Your Life

  1. What did I do today to move towards my major goal?
  2. What did I do today that prevented me from achieving my major goal?
  3. What new things must I do to achieve my major goal?

Questions are powerful – but only if you take the time to answer them. Below is the exact process I have used to address these lovely questions :) .

I love it so much that if it were a human being I would take it behind the middle school and… (*censored out of respect for small children*)

How to Implement the three questions.

1Step 1: Identify A Tool To Write Your Thoughts.

You can use a computer, a journal, a notebook, a sketchpad even a napkin (not recommended). I like to use a journal.

Really, it doesn’t matter what you use. You just need to capture your thoughts with the written word :) .

Step 2: Each night answer The 3 questions (in writing!)

Each night before I hit the hay, I write a quick answer to each question. I like to write them in bullet point form. It takes about 10 minutes more or less.

I list everything I did that moved me towards my goals. Example: I studied the Kihon Dosa for 1 hour (Basic forms in Aikido). I list everything I did that prevented me from achieving my goals. Example: I perused Facebook for too long. I list new behaviors I can do to move towards my dream. Normally I only list 1 behavior. Writing down too many can be overwhelming. I always try to choose a behavior that I can implement the next day. Example: Read “Angry men in White Pajamas” (This is a book about Aikido).

Do you see why this is powerful?

By answering the questions I immediately know: What I need to keep doing. What I need to stop doing. What I need to start doing.

Step 3: Establish a time for weekly reflection.

Each week on Monday morning I sit down and analyze my previous week. I look over my journal. I identify 3 specific things:

  1. Which behaviors helped me move towards my goals.
  2. Which behaviors prevented me from achieving my goals.
  3. Which new behaviors I need to start doing.

After I look over my journal (reading all the entries from each day) I commit to add 1 new behavior this upcoming week.

Every week it changes.

I take this 1 new behavior and write it in my journal.

For example one week I wrote out:

“I wake up at 5am and train in the mornings.”

Step 4: Implement your planned changes.

By going through this process you will identify the key behaviors that move you towards your goals.

It won’t do a darn thing if you don’t implement it. Take the new behavior you chose (from Step 3) and start doing it!

It will feel awesome to take action towards your big goal.

Step 5: Rinse, Recycle and Repeat.

Every week I go through this process. Now, it’s second nature. I naturally run through my daily activities and do an analysis.

Imagine what your life would be like if you constantly made progress towards your goals?

It would be incredible!

That is the power of this process, it guarantees that you are constantly improving.

For The Comments.

What new behaviors will you start doing this week to move towards your major goals?

  • usolee

Those 3 questions have already powered the later half of my 2012. Thanks for asking me to ask myself them, Izzy! Thanks to these questions, I’m already about 3 months deep into my 2013 goals.

    • usolee

btw, you gotta get up on the score board bro!

      • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

I expect you to teach me your “steal time” method… Then I can grab a point on the universe :) .

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Dang man! That’s like stealing time… Which I was under the impression of being impossible. But you proved me wrong on this one man :) . I”m stoked to get back to Japan and make some big things happen :) .

That’s some biolumescence (spelled correctly?) deep stuff… Okay, maybe not. But I really wanted to write that :) .

  • Paul

Love the three questions. I like what Jack Canfield said that when they were building Chicken Soup for the Soul series they did five things a day towards their success. Progress not perfection will get you there soon. As one person said leave perfection to God. Looking forward to your posts for the new year as I start my new career. Gotta tell ya i loved that video you and your friend shot a little while back. I also like the idea that keeping a vision board around to keep focus is a cool idea along with writing done your goals to lock it in your mind. So how long before you reach your goal and whats the next.

Dream big brother for it’s our dreams that stir the soul. Have a great year. Fortune Favors the Bold

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Seriously! You got like 8 solid quotes in there Paul :) .

“Progress not perfection will get you there” – This is the mindset of success!
“leave perfection to God!” – Awesome line!
“I loved that video you and your friend shot a little while back” – Clearly your a good judge of character :) . Thanks for saying this man. It means a lot to me!

What’s next for me? I got some big goals that I am setting up for the 2013. I’ll be writing about them in a future post. But for now, I’m going to be really focused on my Aikido training. I want to get in the greatest shape of my life. I’ll be adding more time to my training and adding running to my exercising :) . Also, I want to spread the word about this site. I want people to realize they can follow their dreams!

  • Sean

These are powerful questions. I find myself asking them on a weekly basis (though apparently I skipped step 1 & 2) and it’s amazing how much can be accomplished through weekly challenges. My answers are kept short and simple to avoid overanalyzing – just file away the things that didn’t work and adjust accordingly.

I think next week my change will be to do the first two steps. Should be enlightening to ask these questions on a daily basis.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Hahaha! Sean I love this quote: “just file away the things that didn’t work and adjust accordingly”.

That is a beautiful philosophy and line :) . I’d love to hear how it works out for you to implement the questions on a daily basis. Don’t hesitate to be honest – in other words if you prefer to do it weekly I’d love to hear about that and why :) . Feel free to reply here in the comments or you can shoot me an email at izzy@30yearoldninja.com :) .

      Peace my man.

Izzy, love your 3 questions…daily practice is key.

Your reflection process is valuable, taking the time to assess and decide what to change in your own behavior.

I choose 1 new habit a month, 10 minutes and more a day.

I am a musician, September was play saxophone every day, still doing it 90+ days later.

October started singing lessons, so sing and play guitar everyday.

November was write a page+ in my notebook, any topic, learn to free write.

December was keep doing all three new habits!

It takes about 20-60 minutes a day, usually after everyone else has gone to bed.

I feel my super powers strengthening….

January is, writing and finishing a piece a week.

Izzy, what’s your next new habit?

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Dude! Trevor that is some legit strategies you got going on there. I like how you focus on one thing at a time – and nail it!

I might be adopting some portions of this :) .

My next new habit… Hmm… Good question :) . I want to Run 3 days a week on top of my martial arts training! I like that one :) .

      • http://outrunmusic.com/music Trevor

I’ve done some running, had no idea how much was involved and how many people invest some serious time and effort in it!

Do some research and reading and talking to runners, especially about keeping yourself from injury.

        Good luck!

        • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Funny you say that Trevor. I was back in America for the holidays and my dad is a huge exercise fanatic. As soon as I got home I told him how I want to do some more running but I always hurt myself when I was running in the past. He handed me a book called “Chi Running” I read it page by page… It has blown me away. I have been running up to 5x a week with zero pain.. Pretty crazy since before I could barely handle 2 days.

          • http://outrunmusic.com/music Trevor

I’ll look out for Chi Running, it will find me :)

Long story short, my problem was pacing, trying to sprint instead of run, had to slow down and enjoy it….

It was a great life lesson: http://outrunmusic.com/outrunmusic-story/

I think it’s healthy to analyze on a daily basis whether we’ve moved closer to, or further from, the life we want. However, I sometimes grow weary of the language of “goals” and “accomplishments” because it’s so ingrained in us from elementary school on that it feels like WORK. Stuff to do, instead of things that create the life we want. Starts to feel like the goals are controlling us (instead of the other way around).

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

      What’s up Down :) .

I can hear you on that one. A few years back I got really annoyed by the language. The tragedy is that goals are crazy powerful, but because so many of us have negative experiences in school (in regards to setting goals) that we allow this to stop us from really attacking goals.

I think goals are also scary. As kids we are often lead to believe that you either “succeed” or “fail”. The beauty in goals lies in the learning we get along the way. Unfortunately, many schools rather than focus on the importance of learning they define everything by getting a particular grade.

Either which way, I hope you achieve some big things this year Down (You can call it whatever you want!)

  • Erik

I’m just starting out on my 2013 goals and these questions are definitely going to come in handy for me!

Last year, I used the Seinfeld calendar method to stay consistent with writing, drawing, meditating, and exercising everyday.
I didn’t know the right questions to ask myself last year, but I do now. Thanks for posting this, Izzy!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Haha! I love the Seinfeld calendar method. It’s straight forward, to the point, and really focused. The thing about that method is that it is ideal if you are focusing solely on one thing. If you have multiple things you are trying to make happen how do you track it?

I’m stoked for 2013 man! It’s the most important year of our lives :) . I hope you got off to a good start on your goals.

      • Erik

I print out multiple copies of the calendar for other goals, but I also use idonethis.com so I get a daily e-mail reminder of what I did the previous day. I feel good about this year. :)

        • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

NICE! That’s really creative. I might be sharing that with a few folks :) .

  • MrTravisScott

Great ideas to keep up w/ your goals! I also believe it is important to reflect (either daily or weekly)….it is a way to ensure you are on track to hit your goals. Another tip for success is to have an accountabilit buddy to meet with once/month. Schedule a monthly call with someone you know and trust to review what you have been doing, what you are going to change, and how to improve.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Dude! Mr. Travis Scott I love your idea man.

Having an accountability buddy is crazy powerful. On top of keeping us accountable it is also wonderful to be friends with a person that genuinely cares about our own success. It’s awesome you have found people in your life to connect with on that level.

  • http://www.modernmom.com/blogs/wendy-irene Wendy Irene

These aren’t new behaviors but ones that I want to do consistently. Write 5 things in my gratitude journal daily, exercise most days, and meditate for 11 min daily. Doing these things makes me feel at peace. Cheers to a great 2013!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Happy new year Wendy :) .

You have identified the things that make you happy, and most importantly you do them! That is life changing. *fist pound * to that :) .

  • capePHAROAH

This week (this whole year actually) will be about really taking responsibility. Reflecting on my daily choices and how they affect my ultimate destiny.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Cape that is really awesome! One of the key characteristics to self made millionaires is personal responsibility. When we start to take responsibility for everything in our life it truly is life changing. When I was a depressed anxious teacher I finally had it! I decided to take control of my life. Fast forward 3 years later – and now I live in Japan and I’m trying to become a ninja :) .

      Powerful stuff!

  • capePHAROAH

    Great post by the way.

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Thank you for saying that :) .

  • http://twitter.com/GwynMinerva Minerva Gwyn

Great tip, Izzy! Amazing how simple it is and I think it can really give us a broader perspective on what we’ve been doing and how to plan the way from where we are to where we want to be more efficiently. I’ll certainly try that out! :)

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Awesome Minerva :) . Please let me know how it goes. I even got my dad hooked on it – and he loves it.

  • Aaron

Back from time off, what a wonderful clear guide for getting back into work & personal goals Izzy, thanks!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Awesome Aaron :) . I love hearing that you found it helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment and share this :) .

  • http://lifeadvicethecoachingway.blogspot.com/ Angela Goodeve

Hi! I am stopping by from the Top 50 to check out all of the wonderful Bloggers! I like your use of humor, and the way you lay everything out in simple steps. I have been doing these things through a Mastermind group, and it is amazing how much you actually accomplish that you don’t even realize until you sit down and write them out, then you like “Wow! I really did accomplish a lot!”. We communicate our wins/successes; challenges (which we have redefined as opportunities); and plans for success (our goals for the next two weeks). We take the “Coach approach” to our meetings to support, acknowledge, and “trouble shoot” along the way…does wonders!

    • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

Hi Angela :) . I’m glad you not only dropped by but also took the time to leave a comment as well!

Mastermind groups can be crazy powerful. If you have found people you truly connect with, and each of you brings a unique, encouraging perspective to the table it can be life changing!

      That’s super awesome!
